  • Ariana Ávila is a doctoral candidate in the department of anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her dissertation, based in Immokalee, Florida, focuses on how farmworkers practice food sharing as a form of care. To accomplish this, she uses the framework of food apartheid to situate the structural barriers causing food insecurity in an agricultural town. Her goal is to complete her dissertation during the 2023–24 academic year and transition into health-tech research.
