  • Brandee Newkirk is a doctoral candidate in the Art, Art History, and Visual Studies department at Duke University. After being awarded the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Predoctoral Fellowships to develop her current project, she is completing her dissertation, “Rendering Fat: Largeness Inside the Black Beauty Economy.” This project analyzes image productions representing diet and fitness ideals for black women consumers, from 1920 to the present.
